  When this material ignites, a metal container is placed over the sculpture to contain the the smoke and to enable the flames to consume the oxygen inside the container. (Scroll down for more images) 
This reduced-oxygen atmosphere heavily smokes the unglazed surfaces, turning them black, and creates a varied color and pronounced crackle in the glaze.
